Our Story

The story of Cornish fishing is one of resilience, adaptation, and a deep-seated connection to the sea. From the earliest fishermen to the modern-day custodians of the sea, the fishing industry has been a cornerstone of Cornish identity.

our strategy

In 2021, we developed the Cornish Fishing Strategy to refocus the strategic vision for protecting and enhancing the Cornish seafood industry post-Brexit.

Four key areas of action were highlighted; science & sustainability, ports infrastructure , recruitment & retention and communications & marketing. These pillars continue to inform and steer our current and future projects.

our history

The Cornish Fish Producers Organisation (CFPO) was established in 1975 and has developed to be a united and authoritative voice to represent the industry. Starting with just a handful of fishermen, the CFPO now has over 170 members and remains responsible for quota management, marketing and member advocacy.

We are the largest constituent member of the National Federation of Fishermen’s Organisations (NFFO).

Our members have always been and will continue to be, at the very heart of the CFPO. They’re active fishermen who shape our work today.

We proudly represent England’s most diverse and economically significant fleet and are accountable for 80% of the volume and value of fish and shellfish landed in Cornwall.

Our membership spans a wide range of fishing methods, from beam trawl and trawl to ring net, gill net, tangle/trammel net, pots, and handlining.

This remarkable diversity strengthens our credibility as a balanced and trusted authority on fishing-related matters across regional, national and international forums.

Over time, as fisheries and their management have evolved and developed, so has the role of the CFPO. In an increasingly bureaucratic and complex world of fisheries management, the CFPO has become an indispensable voice for commercial fishermen across Cornwall and beyond.

The 16th to 18th centuries marked a golden era for Cornish fishing, particularly for the pilchards fishery. Cornwall’s fisheries quickly became renowned for quality fish and shellfish and Cornish seafood found its way to the tables of Italy, Spain, and beyond.

Today, the reputation of Cornish fishermen and the fish they catch lives on. Our fleet continues to supply a fantastically diverse range of sustainable fish and shellfish for dinner plates worldwide.
